Arr, me hearties! Get out your One Piece cosplay (or just pretend you have some) and let’s meet the crew.

This tag is courtesy of Mel, so make sure to swing over there if you want some good boys (and single gal).

The Rules

  • Display the My Pirate Crew logo and add ‘My Pirate Crew’ as a tag.
  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and post a link to their blog.
  • Link back to the original post here (so I can compare your crews to mine).
  • Select seven anime characters and give them a position on the crew. These are the positions you can fill: Warrior, sniper, chef, doctor, scientist, navigator, strategist, mechanic, entertainer.
  • Nominate 5-10 bloggers.
  • Set sail and rule the seas!

Note: I’ve deliberately abstained from Mei Hatsume (BnHA) and Dr Stein (Soul Eater) because they’re too many people’s go-to characters for certain positions.

Chef

Somehow the perfect character for the “chef” position occurred to me first. It probably says something negative about my cooking skills, but…I digress.

Anyways, our chef is Rin Okumura from Blue Exorcist. Although he may be your typical shouty shonen hero which makes him ideal to be a warrior, I picked him for his ability to cook (which you’d only know was one of his pastimes if you actually followed the series in some capacity).

Doctor/Sniper

Nobody said I couldn’t double up on a series that wasn’t One Piece (Mel picked 3 BnHA characters!), so I continue with Blue Exorcist choices by having Rin’s twin brother, Yukio, join the crew. Yukio’s typical weapon is a smaller gun than the term “sniper” requires, but as a Dragoon in his home series, he’d have training in the traditional sniper rifle as well, methinks. He’s also a Doctor in his home series, which makes him handy for when both demons and pirates attack…

…not to mention I could just make the twins live in the same room like they do at True Cross to save on space.

Navigator

For this one, I’m picking Akari Mizunashi from the Aria series. Part of an Undine’s job is navigation, so it’s just a matter of increasing the scale (or maybe even decreasing, depending on whether she deals with the entire Neo Venezia or not) to ensure she gets the job done…not to mention her sunny disposition and ability to see every day as a  adventure will be a nice contrast to Rin and Yukio’s fighting.

Scientist/Mechanic

I honestly don’t think there are too many choices that would fit the open seas. Between Kanata Shinawa of Kado (theoretical physicist), Mifune (same series, physicist), Rintarou Okabe (Steins;Gate, haven’t watched far enough to know what kind of scientist he might be/is, but I assume from the premise it might be physics…again *le sigh*) and Kento Amagase (ReLIFE, his science is unknown but from the nature of his position, it would have to be something along the lines of biology/chemistry…but he didn’t appear enough in the series for anyone to understand his personality either, making him a bad choice).

Luckily, Google-sensei came to my rescue with Komui from D Gray Man. (You might not be aware of it, but I’ve read 24 volumes of the manga as I type this…which is pretty close to being up-to-date.)

To be honest, I only ever remembered Komui for being a joke character whose creations always did terrible things (Komulins come to mind, hence his secondary mechanic status), but the fact he’s able to work with multiple sciences with zero sweat…plus Innocence…makes him an ideal candidate, although his destructive tendencies wouldn’t make him too bad a candidate for the battlefield either.

Now we just need to find a way to stop him being so attached to Lenalee, and he’d be perfect for the job!

Strategist

Let’s be real – I love a good series with a bunch of plot twists, so picking one strategist is tough. However, potential candidates had some real problems – I mean, among others, we’re pitting Dazai from Bungou Stray Dogs against (Lieutenant Tokushirou) Tsurumi from Golden Kamuy. Why are all the nutjobs the best strategists???

However, there is a safer choice, relatively speaking (somewhat…?), in Golden Kamuy – Toshizou Hijikata. Say what you will about how much the “Hire a Samurai” period is used in anime, because that gets me a load of other Hijikata variants I could use instead. However, this old coot can still swing his Izuminokami Kanesada in nasty ways and strategise with the best of ’em, so while he may not be as youthful or good-looking as I want my team to be, he’s still more than capable for the job.

He’s fairly low maintenance for an old man due to his background as a samurai, which is a bonus.

Entertainer

Oh, finally an easy one…assuming we could bend space-time to specifically get Kikuhiko from the first season of Showa Genroku Rakugo Shinjuu, because I’m not going to double up on old men “just because”.

At the stage the man who would be Yakumo Yurakutei the 8th assumes the name “Kikuhiko”, he’s still got a bunch of room to develop his style of “bawdy story”, and what better place to develop those tales than with a bunch of pirates? Sure, I worry he might get seasick and he might not even be able to swab the deck with his leg injury, but that’s not his job…

…that’s for the hostages I collect on my journey! Wahahaha!

Warrior

Being on the water a bunch means water as a power is redundant, I think. So to get over the fact we can’t have my beloved En-chan in the crew, we’re going to need a bishonen who kicks butt like no tomorrow. I have a bunch of characters who fit that description, but I’ll side with Yato (Noragami) for this one.

Why?

  1. You automatically get Yukine, since one can’t really fight without the other.
  2. Yato wouldn’t lose either – by fighting, he’d get a bunch of followers.
  3. He could double up as emergency janitor or most of the other roles for an extra fee. There’s more than enough warriors in this crew that we’d probably need him covering other bases instead, and all that work to gain 5 yen coins must’ve made him an expert in almost everything. I do recall him fixing busted tyres in his home series, so he’s suitable for being a mechanic…but trying to teach him science might blow people’s minds instead, so let’s keep him well away from it.
  4. I mean, he’s a god of calamity. When he’s your warrior (as opposed to, say, Kofuku with Daikoku or Bishamonten with all her Regalia), what could go wrong…?

Fear me, all who cross my path! Be prepared to swab the deck if you lose in battle!

Anyways, that took me a good few hours to write, but I think in the end, I chose the right people for the job. It’s a nice mix of quiet people and loud ones, which should balance itself out.

So what do you think about the choices? Are there any better choices you can think of?
