I’ve gone through part of this process already here, hence the cutting of some of the rules. However, I’m going to cover different ground from that post.
Yamanbagiri Kunihiro
When the English version of Touken Ranbu came out a few months back, I knew it would be a hard choice because by that point, I’d already trained up a Kashuu once on the Japanese version of the game and knew he was great, but I also learnt from then Yamanbagiri was also a good choice for a beginner.
Yamanbagiri feeds into a few of the tropes I like quite a bit:
- his complex about being a fake makes me want to console and/or hug him (that’s essentially what “moe” looks like, to me…)
- the duality (three-sided nature…?) of his timid nature, his tsundere moments when he’s told he’s beautiful and moments where he gains enough confidence to fight
- he’s one of the more passive, soft-spoken swords, which are generally my type out of otome game types
- he’s also really reliable, as you can see when he’s the leader of the First Unit in Katsugeki Touken Ranbu, but then he can have some moments where he gets too caught up in his own thoughts and can be a bit stupid as a result too – see what he does regarding the sunflower in Hanamaru for what I mean
Gentaro Yumeno
Ramuda was the reason I discovered Hypnosis Mic, but spinning Gentaro in Mudae was the reason I fell into HypMic hell. (Mudae is…basically something to become addicted to. You shouldn’t try it if you don’t want to fall into gacha hell, especially if you use Discord a lot aside from it.)
Gentaro’s definitely my favourite singing- (rapping?-) wise, with both Scenario Liar and Utena hitting my favourites at the end of 2020 and now Black Journey joining them in my favourites. Character-wise, he is a bundle of contradictions but an intriguing one – I mean, he’s an author who dresses in old-fashioned clothes and writes with a pen on manuscript paper, but also uses a smartphone in trendy modern Shibuya. It kind of stands out, no?
In a weird way, I think we are all liars who want to become someone else or go somewhere else to some degree (especially in this time where it seems like this virus will never, ever go away…), so in that sense, I find Gentaro relatable.
Waver Velvet
…uh, if you know my tastes already, you can kinda see where this is going, no? In terms of looks and general personality (meek/passive but possibly with a confidence boost/”second personality”, tall, long dark hair…), at least.
Sure, small Waver is a bit of a wimp and not really worth anyone’s attention, but by the end of his first rodeo, that’s where it’s at. (Partially proven by his popularity, plus the fact he got his own spinoff by extension…and how he only ever seems to appear in “grumpy old man” form – and thus he’s more recognisable as that – in said spinoffs, as opposed to small Waver.) Besides, when the entire series is everyone trying to blow each other with the biggest, flashiest explosions possible, getting by on smarts (and training others up to do giant explosions for you) is no easy feat. Plus, unlike a bunch of the other husbandos who have long hair mostly for aesthetic, he has a reason for wearing his hair long (it’s used for magical purposes).

Sidebar: I used to think my type in anime and its associated media was specifically split into two camps: the lazy ones (Urushihara + En) and the guys with white hair (Decim, Kokkuri, Snake, Viktor…), but as I continued to add to the husbando list, it turned out my taste was a lot more diverse than that.
Tokitaka Nagae
The most realistic husbando candidate yet, even if only because his series is an SoL and so he doesn’t need to be a battle boi like the others. That doesn’t make him any less husbando material than the others – it just means I really, really like battle bois.
You gotta respect a man who can cook, work in a cafe, run a ceramics class for elderly people and grow vegetables (admit it: if he were real, he’d have the patience of a saint…). I was introduced to him via the anime, but in the manga, you also see him and the others read shoujo manga at one point!
Despite this, sadly there isn’t much I can say about him because even though I’m the one person who knows about Rokuhoudou more than anyone else in the English world, due to it saving me a few years back (while I was running this very blog, in fact!), it seems I mostly skipped the Tokitaka development chapters simply by not being there…(I’ve seen Tsubaki development chapters, there was at least one Sui and Yakyou chapter and Gure got his development in the anime and that was continued in ch. 52, but the only chapter on Tokitaka in recent memory was ch. 64, about some old guy and melon soda, prior to chs. 67 – 68 where all four were involved.)
Chuuya Nakahara
I was introduced to Bungou Stray Dogs, and a lot of its characters by extension, manga first and then anime and Mayoi later. However, now that Wan is out in anime form, you can kind of understand where I’m coming from about Chuuya, right? On one hand, he’s the most badass character in the series and a literal god in human form. On the other hand, he argues with Dazai (and by proxy, Atsushi) over flower viewing spots and has a weird but friendly relationship with Akutagawa.
…just another bundle of contradictions in my husbando list, it seems.
I finally got to do this post! To be honest with you, I’ve been wanting to do this post for a while (that’s what generated all the other husbando posts, basically…haha…), to the point where it became one of the posts I decided not to semi-retire the Spellbook for. After finding Shoujo’s invitation though, it was really just a matter of time until I responded to it…
