Episode 10
- I feel like the reason Nitori was laughed at – and only Nitori – is the double standard…but clearly it can’t be that simple…
- I think Yama-P was confessing to Takatsuki because he still saw her (what pronouns do I use…?) as a girl.
- *cue Otomedomoyo from O Maidens in Your Savage Season* Now that’s Mari Okada’s frankness about adolescence showing through.
- Hmm…Anna’s discussion with her friend makes me think of Zacharie from Magical Warrior Diamond Heart (who’s non-binary/bisexual, come to think of it, so it’s a very similar deal to Shu). Also on the subject of Zacharie, generally the difference between bishonen and a member of the LGBTIQ+ community is that bishonen either tend to 1) be heterosexual by default or 2) not have their sexuality stated so the fans can go nuts with the headcanons, but still assert enough masculinity that you can clearly tell they are a man and/or identify as such (for an example of this, see Samatoki from HypMic) and it also goes the other way (such as with Kashima from Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun), although I admit androgynous people and LGBTIQ+ people have a significant amount of overlap by nature. Update: Come to think of it, if Haruhi is an icon for some of the trans community for helping some people realise they were LGBTIQ+, there would be a lot of overlap in their appeal as well.
- Hana-Kimi isn’t a good example for bringing up now since the plot revolves around a crossdressing girl who’s doing that to chase after a boy, but since Umeda (school doctor in that series) is gay, I think he’d be much more understanding of Nitori’s plight than this nurse is.
- I remember when I was trying to write an (?) SoL story, since I was primarily a fantasy/action writer before that, I struggled to find conflicts with as much intensity as those with a clear protagonist and antagonist…then, after successfully writing an SoL story, I had a rut where I couldn’t go back to having clear protags/antags, LOL. That comes through here too.
Episode 11
- People should wear what they want, when they want…but the day everyone accepts that sort of thing unconditionally is a long way away.
- “I can’t tell if he’s mean or nice.” – Maybe Doi is tsundere…? Update: I get the feeling I said something similar in the past, although I forget the exact episode.
- Which one is Shirai, again…?
- I almost thought there was a post-credits scene, but there wasn’t. Hoshiai no Sora spoilt me on that front…LOL.
All in all, I think this was a necessary anime for the issues it addresses, but its ending is fairly inconclusive (because possibly the only way to have a conclusive finale, I think, is having Takatsuki and/or Nitori decide once and for all to be the opposite gender, with the transition and the works…much like Yuki). I thought the second gender-bender play would get more resistance, but it does show how much the characters have developed and pushes for (some semblance of) a happy ending.
Well, according to what Jon said in AMQ last week, Perfect Insider is next, so I’ll see you again in Round 6. I’ll need to watch ep. 1 again to refresh my memory, since it seems I don’t have my notes from the original stashed where I thought they would be…

So spoilers (yes, but because she see’s herself as a girl too, meaning she decides NOT to transition ultimately). You’ll have to read the manga to really get the full picture.

You kind of did. Doi is a “bad person” who begins to realize that and change, the manga handles this a lot better but that story also continues further of course.
