Sometimes you want to write an intense post with a purpose…and sometimes you just want to write a fluffy little list to tide you over.

Meta note: This was pulled from the depths of the drafts folder. The reason I hadn’t published it until now is it really doesn’t fit my current writing style for blog posts. Applying process of elimination to the Morose Mononokean comment, it was probably started around winter 2019.

For the ordinary internet user, it seems like there’s too much stuff out there to do…so much that sometimes you eat while doing stuff. As I was compiling the list, I started describing anime like wine – that is, you have to have the perfect show to go with the food at hand – so enjoy the recommendations. Just…don’t get any food on your prized discs/books or any library stuff you have to return, okay?

  • Sushi and Pocky

Why? It’s just a bit of a no-brainer…to me, who’s grown up on discount sushi and still gets it for special occasions, at least. Another habit of mine is watching Sailor Moon episodes on special occasions (due to how near and dear to my heart that series is), and surprisingly a handroll or bento box goes very nicely with them.

(Speaking of which, I do recall the anime club used to give out Haribo lollies and Pocky boxes when you signed up to them. I don’t think I’ve gotten a sign-up bag with food in it since COVID happened, though.)

  • Creme Brulee

I thought of this list while wrapping up a round-up post and digging into one. It seems like the sweetness of one would be good for accompanying something like Morose Mononokean, which I was planning to watch an episode of at the time.

  • Chips

I’m in one of those countries that says crisps = chips and potato chips = chips, so…uh, chips it is! I’m a notorious finisher of chip packets to those who dare supply me with any, particularly at the anime club (where I sometimes take extra packets home from, assuming they have any). I seem to remember watching the first episode of Humanity has Declined with a packet in hand…which was probably not ideal, all things considered, considering what happened to bread in that episode…

  • Sandwiches

Speaking of Sailor Moon and bread, it’s said Ami’s favourite food is sandwiches because they’re easy to hold and do something else simultaneously…like read a book. Or watch an anime episode. Or serve to a crowd if you have a huge platter of them, which also happened during movie nights.

  • Pretzels and Wafer Sticks

Sushi and Pocky make sense as anime and manga accompaniments because they’re at least Japanese, but pretzels and chocolate wafer sticks? These are actually more things from the anime club – big bulk buckets of them were available at Costco.

This is definitely not a definitive list, as I’ve spent about 6 years with my anime club and have way too many fond memories of food with them. (For one thing, I haven’t written about the popcorn – presumably homemade, since some of it was clearly unpopped – we had during the screening of Josee, the Tiger and the Fish!)

Now it’s your turn to wax poetic about your memories with food and anime/manga.
